The Kingdom of Morocco, also known as the Maghreb, is a North African country that borders the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It is distinguished by its Amazigh cultural influences. The name “Maghreb” in Arabic refers to “the place of sunset” and reflects the historical significance of this region. From the 10th to the 14th centuries, Morocco expanded its influence and ruled over North Africa, leading to the region being referred to as the Maghreb as a legacy of the Moroccan empire. The word “Morocco” is derived from the Berber term Amerruk (ⴰⵎⵕⵕⴽ), a diminutive of Amurakuch (Marrakech), which was the former capital of the Almoravid and Almohad dynasties in Morocco. Amurakuch itself originates from “Amur n Wakouch” (ⴰⵎⵓⵔ ⵏ ⵡⴰⴽⵓⵛ), meaning “land of God.” This rich historical and cultural background has contributed to the unique identity of Morocco within the North African region.
